Why telling young people to avoid sexting doesn’t work and what to do instead with Giselle Woodley and Lelia Green
This is the 23rd episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe. In this episode we’re going to find out why telling our children not to engage in sexting - simply isn’t working.
It’s a conversation that many adults dread - talking to the young people in their lives about the dangers of sexting.
What is sexting? Young people refer to this more commonly as nudes or dick-pics. It’s creating explicit text messages, or naked or partially naked sexual photos or videos, and then sending them online through an app or from your phone.
While the dangers of sexting are well known, and adults think that we have made that clear to children by telling them “just don’t do it”, research from the Edith Cowan University is showing that approach is not working.
And that in the same way we teach school children about safe sex, we also need to teach them about safe sexting, because it is now such an omnipresent part of their lives.
Researchers Giselle Woodley and Lelia Green conducted extensive interviews with teenagers to find out how and why current messages to simply avoid sexting are failing to hit the mark, despite the legal risks that children know they take by doing it.
On this episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation - Giselle and Lelia tell us about the sensitive way they conducted their research, to give teenagers a voice on this complex issue, a voice which so often is not heard.
It’s time for difficult conversations to shine light on this hidden topic. This podcast talks openly about child abuse, child sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation and harmful sexual behaviours. Each episode of this series will feature practical insights on how to teach your child safety in the world today. REMINDER: As Denise says in the podcast - Take care when listening. The road to justice and healing with actor and child sexual abuse survivor Madeleine West
This is the 22nd episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe.
It’s a tragic aspect of child sexual abuse, that often the victim survivors are denied a voice to speak about what happened to them.
That in the noise of reporting and researching the prevalence of child sexual abuse, their voice is not heard.
Community attitudes, legal restrictions, and outdated attitudes of who is responsible, can leave the person who survived the abuse, feeling blame and guilt for what happened to them.
And that leads to silence. And people not realising the extent of the problem throughout all levels of society.
Australian actor Madeleine West is on a mission to turn that around. She has bravely told her story of child sexual abuse in multiple media outlets, in print, through audio, and on programs such as 60 Minutes. And she’s hoping that by doing this, she can empower others to tell the truth of what happened to them. So that the shame on victims ends, and is rightly placed on the perpetrator.
By doing this Madeleine hopes that awareness is raised, and hopefully prevents other children from becoming victims.
Today on Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation - Madeleine West tells us about the turning point that enabled her to tell her story. She also talks about the supports she continues to use to help her cope with the revelations, and what she hopes people who have had similar experiences of child abuse can do to access help, on the long road to justice and healing. As Denise Morcombe says - t’s time for difficult conversations to shine light on this hidden topic. This podcast talks openly about child abuse, child sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation and harmful sexual behaviours. Each episode of this series will feature practical insights on how to teach your child safety in the world today. REMINDER: As Denise says in the podcast - Take care when listening. The hidden dangers to children in online gaming with Dr Dennis Desmond
This is the 21st episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe. In this episode we’re going to find out how a former counterintelligence special agent for the US Army and the FBI is now using his diverse investigative skills to crack down on cyber crime - including the criminals targeting children online. Dr Dennis Desmond specialises in international and state sponsored cyber threats - and his research is finding that the processes used by criminals to launder cryptocurrencies on the dark net are now being used increasingly for online child abuse. He tells us how platforms such as Reddit and Twitch are being used to groom and recruit young people into criminal underworlds and even terrorist groups, and what parents should do about this dangerous trend. That includes the danger signs parents should look out for and what strategies they can use to counter this, particularly - as he describes it - how parents should actively become their child’s first line of defence.

Neurodivergent children who engage in harmful sexual behaviours: an overseas perspective with Kevin Creeden
This is the 19th episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe. In this episode we’re going to get an overseas perspective on how to help and treat children who are showing harmful sexual behaviours. We speak with Kevin Creeden from The Whitney Academy in Massachusetts about their unique approach. As Kevin explains in this episode, children stay in the Whitney Academy for treatment by living in the residential program if they have shown problematic sexual behaviours. He estimates about half of the children in the program are neurodivergent, and so he now specialises in helping neurodivergent children navigate the sexual spectrum by focussing on what is healthy sexuality. Kevin says this is crucial to help them learn from their experience and be able to return to their families and communities with new skills and understanding of what is appropriate.

The shocking number of Australian men sexually attracted to children and teens with Professor Michael Salter
This is the 18th episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe. In this episode we’re going to deep dive into the results of a groundbreaking global study into sexual offending against children, which shows a shocking number of Australian men are sexually attracted to children and teens.
Michael Salter is a Professor of Criminology at the University of New South Wales. He was lead author of this world first study conducted by UNSW and Jesuit Social Services, which surveyed thousands of men across Australia, the UK and the US. It found that one in six Australian men reported having sexual feelings towards children, and the profile of these men, may surprise you - as Michael explains for us on this episode. The research revealed the prevalence and characteristics of men in the Australian community who sexually abuse children. Professor Salter hopes the findings shine a light onto how to prevent adult men from becoming perpetrators of child sexual abuse.

Vital information for parents
Prof Michael Salter’s world first research lifts the lid on what we knew anecdotally - that a surprisingly large group of men - 6% of Australian men have sexual interest in children. Michael’s work in exposing the failure of big tech to protect children from online predators who are sharing child abuse images is vital work. Governments must listen and act.
